NEHAWU Eastern Cape Mourns The Passing Of Comrade Nomphelo Mahlulo

Wednesday June 29, 2022

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] in the Eastern Cape has learnt with sadness of the passing on of Yure Mdyogolo Acting Regional Treasurer, Comrade Nomphelo Mahlulo.

NEHAWU in the Eastern Cape sends its deep and sincere condolences to her family, friends and comrades in the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM). Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. We wish them hope in the midst of sorrow, comfort in the midst of pain.

As NEHAWU, we dip our banner in honour of this working-class leader. Comrade Mahlulo joined the union in 2009 after having been permanently employed by the Provincial Department of Health. Before being permanently employed by the department, she had worked as a contract worker since 2007.

Immediately after joining the union, Comrade Mahlulo became active in the affairs of the organisation and her leadership qualities were recognised. She was elected as a Shopsteward in 2009 and as Branch Secretary in 2017 and later elected as Acting Regional Treasurer of Yure Mdyogolo Region in 2022. Comrade Mahlulo was active in COSATU East London Local and was a member of the SACP in Skenjana Roji District and the ANC in Dr WB Rubusana Region.

Her passing takes place while workers are bleeding and under a relentless attack from the government and employers, who are resolute on destroying collective bargaining and undermine the rights of workers. The province is indeed shattered by the untimely passing of Comrade Mahlulo.

Comrade Mahlulo dedicated her life fighting for workers’ rights and improving their lives. She dedicated her energy to servicing and improving the working conditions of our members at the workplace. In her honour, the union in the province will intensify its campaign to defend collective bargaining. We will continue to fight for improved conditions of service for our members and workers in general.

NEHAWU dips its banner at the passing of Yure Mdyogolo Acting Regional Treasurer, Comrade Nomphelo Mahlulo.

END
